The best recumbent exercise bike is, to a certain extent, down to personal preference, but there are certain features you can look for that will help you find the best recumbent exercise bike for you.
For me, the best bike I have used so far is the Schwinn 231 recumbent exercise bike. They recently had one of these installed at the gym I go to, and it seems pretty much everyone who has used it loves it.
It comes with a whole bunch of features including plenty of resistance levels, preset workout programs and profiles, is fully adjustable and is extremely comfy. I could have sat on there all day quite easily.
But what makes the Schwinn the best recumbent exercise bike in my book is that it tracks and records pretty much every data item you could ever want to know – like calories burned, distance traveled, elapsed time, your pulse rate and current and average speed.
But rather than take my advice (which ultimately is my personal preference) here’s some tips on what to look for when buying your own bike:
Build Quality. If you get the chance, compare a more expensive recumbant exercise bike against a cheaper one side by side. The difference should be obvious as you definitely get what you pay for, and the quality of the unit will certainly have an impact on your enjoyment when using it.
The Display Console. A higher priced item will have a more detailed console and will monitor more dynamics. If you’re happy with just speed and distance then there’s no need to pay extra for bikes that monitor heart rate, calories burned etc. But a more expensive bike will also come with a variety preset workout programs and profiles which can enhance the impact of your cardio workout.
Resistance. A good quality recumbant exercise bike will come with a magnetic resistance system which provides variable (or infinite) resistance settings. The other thing to check is how quite the resistance mechanism is, and if it is quite noisy, could you live with the level of noise it creates? It may sound OK in the shop, but is likely to feel a lot noisier when in the confines of your room at home.
Price Range. The best recumbent exercise bike needn’t be the most expensive. As I mentioned above, Schwinn have an excellent recumbent bike selection, and have a very good reputation in the industry as well, and you can buy Schwinn bikes from lots of retailers, including on the internet from Amazon, so shop around. It’s a good idea to actually try out a selection of bikes before you buy, so have a look at local fitness equipment shops to see what they have and how you get on with the cheaper and more expensive bikes. Then once you have decided on a model you like, check out suppliers online as well to find the best deals.
